A user on the social media platform Mastodon claimed an Apple support representative told them "sometimes random security improvements are added to your account," possibly contributing to the lockouts. However, that seems like an overly simplistic explanation for such a widespread issue.
While there has been no official statement from Apple yet on the matter, the scope of reports from users across various products and regions suggests this is indeed a major bug or system glitch affecting random subset of customers rather than an isolated incident. Crucially, there's no evidence at this point that the lockouts are being caused by any sort of security breach, malicious attack, or other nefarious actions.
So what can impacted Apple users do in the meantime besides resetting their passwords? Unfortunately, not much due to the seemingly random nature of who gets affected.
