Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) revealed its slate of nominees for the 2025 Golden Reel awards Monday, recognizing achievement in disciplines involved in the production of sound for the film, television, and video game industries.
The awards comprise 20 categories, and include categories for sound editing, sound design, music editing, and foley artistry.
Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” and Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” each received three nominations, the most of any film. Both pictures were nominated for dialogue/ADR, effects/foley, and music.
Three films were nominated for two awards: “Alien: Romulus,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Wicked.”
The full list of nominees can be found at Deadline.
The awards have a central place within the sound field. “The Golden Reels are one of the only major awards for sound editing,” says Adam Jamal, a sound designer and nominee in the student category.
According to Jamal, the other notable prizes are those awarded by the Cinema Audio Society — which primarily recognizes the mixing specialty — and the Motion Picture Academy (Oscars). As such, the Golden Reels provide the most important landmark towards which specialists can aspire. “My goal as an undergraduate was to get a nomination for their student award, and it’s a massive honor to see that actually happen,” Jamal continued.
Prizes will be presented in a ceremony on Feb. 23 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, in a ceremony to be hosted by Patton Oswalt.
Two honorary awards will also be presented: Kevin Costner will receive the Filmmaker award, and MPSE member Greg Hedgepath will receive the Career achievement award.
