The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, located just outside Los Angeles, receives more visitors annually than iconic sites like Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. Established in 2014 and expanded by President Biden in May, this area now includes 110,000 more acres of protected wilderness. This extension means 757,000 additional people, mostly from diverse backgrounds, live within five miles of Los Angeles' largest green space.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore various activities in the San Gabriel Mountains. Hiking paths, such as the Bridge to Nowhere and Mount Baldy, provide challenging trails for seasoned hikers and easier trails like the Devil’s Punchbowl Loop for families. Beyond hiking, options include mountain biking, camping, and fishing. Nature lovers can marvel at the biodiversity here, home to over 500 native plants and endangered species such as the California condor and the California spotted owl.

The area also offers unique camping experiences. Huttopia Paradise Springs provides an upscale glamping site with historical ties to Hollywood elite. Charlie Chaplin's cabin is among the attractions, adding a historical dimension to modern luxury camping. Visitors can enjoy off-grid experiences combining nature with comfort in accommodations fit for families or couples seeking a unique retreat.

For those who prefer traditional camping, the Crystal Lake Campground offers a starry getaway not seen from the city. With affordable sites, campers can trek to nearby peaks or simply enjoy the activities around the campground, such as fishing or hiking. Another option, the Manker Flat Campground, is ideal for either RV camping or tent setups, providing access to challenging trails and educational opportunities at the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center.

A serene picnic by Jackson Lake offers another way to experience the mountain's beauty. This location allows for activities such as paddleboarding, kayaking, and fishing amid picturesque surroundings. While visiting, reminders to maintain cleanliness and conservation highlight the ongoing efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The San Gabriel Mountains National Monument stands out as a haven for nature enthusiasts and a crucial space for biodiversity. With growing accessibility, this wilderness area presents opportunities for outdoor recreation while supporting conservation and community involvement in nature's preservation.
