The Los Angeles Angels have elected to release outfielder Mickey Moniak from his contract. The 2016 first-overall draft pick won an arbitration hearing related to his salary, earlier this offseason. As a result, he was awarded a $2 million salary.
Instead of keeping him on their payroll, the Angels opted to buy Moniak out of his contract. As a result, he will be awarded $484,000 in termination pay, representing one quarter of his annual salary.
Moniak was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies as a high-schooler in 2016. After several seasons in the minor leagues, he was named to the Philliesโ roster in September 2020. However, he was traded to the Angels after an injury in 2022.
In L.A., Moniak began to find his form, and recorded a .280/.307/.495 slash line in 2023. The following year, he declined precipitously, to .219/.266/.380. Moniakโs performance was substantially worse in this yearโs spring training, prompting the teamโs decision to terminate his contract.
It is unclear how much interest Moniak has gathered from other teams. The Angels were required to put him through unconditional waivers, allowing any team to claim him without compensation, before he could be released from his contract.
Southside Showdown, a baseball news website which covers the budget-constrained Chicago White Sox, ran an article strongly encouraging the team to sign Moniak. The 26-year-old player may be of interest to the Southsiders and other rebuilding teams looking for reclamation opportunities.
With Moniak off the roster, Jo Adell will likely be the teamโs go-to option at center field. Taylor Ward and Mike Trout are expected to retain their positions at left field and right field, respectively.
