Eric Dane, an actor best known for television roles as Cal Jacobs in “Euphoria” and Mark Sloan in “Grey’s Anatomy”, announced Thursday he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in an interview with People.
ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, in which patients progressively lose the ability to move their body. It is also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, after the Hall of Fame baseball player who died from the condition in 1941.
There is no known cure for the disease, and its causes are still poorly understood. Those diagnosed with ALS usually first experience twitching or weakness, which progressively worsens until they are unable to eat or breathe independently.
While ALS is extremely rare, several public figures have been diagnosed with it over the years. Notable patients include physicist Stephen Hawking, who passed away in 2018, as well as Ady Barkan, a universal healthcare advocate, and John Driskell Hopkins, bassist of the country outfit Zac Brown Band.
Dane told People he was able to continue working, and expected to return to the set of “Euphoria” for the show’s next season. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, most patients die within three to five years. However, Hawking, the longest-lived known ALS patient, survived for more than five decades.
