The Silver Fire โ a wildfire which ignited Sunday in the Sierra Nevada mountains โ has prompted an evacuation order for parts of Inyo County, and the closure of Highway 6 in both directions.
The fire was reported North of Bishop Sunday afternoon, and exploded in size overnight. By Monday morning, it had grown to 1,250 acres and was 0% contained. Cal Fire said on social media that multiple structures were threatened.
According to Cal Fire, the following zones are under mandatory evacuation orders: ICU-017-B, ICU-019, ICU-057-B, ICU-065, ICU-087-B, ICU-087-E, and MCU-E039-B. Highway 6 is shut down between Five Bridges Road and State Route 120 E.
According to an update from Cal Fire, weather conditions are obstructing firefighting efforts. โAir and ground resources have been significantly increased to support suppression efforts. However, strong windsโgusting up to 35 mph at Bishop Airportโcontinue to create challenges, grounding some firefighting aircraft and complicating containment operations.โ
Three aircraft encountered turbulence, and were forced to return to Hemet-Ryan Airport Saturday evening, Cal Fire said on social media.
A webcam operated by the University of California, San Diego shows part of the area where the fire started. As of Monday afternoon, the portion covered by the camera does not look to be actively burning. A large area of blackened grass and shrubs is visible.
Cal Fire has not provided an update on the fire since early Monday morning, when it was listed as 1,250 acres and 0% contained. A spokesperson for the agency told the Los Angeles Post that no update was available as of yet.
