(CNN) โ Chrissy Metz documented what she says was a tough childhood in her memoir, โThis Is Me.โ
The โThis Is Usโ star is opening up even more now and has talked about her experiences on โThe Jamie Kern Lima Showโ podcast.
As a youngster, Metz said, she endured โmental, physical, emotional abuseโ about her weight. She got emotional talking about โThis Is Usโ creator, Dan Fogelman, because he purposely chose her for the role that she says changed her life.
โWhat I discovered in therapy was that my dad, for whatever reason, wasnโt able to choose me,โ she said during the podcast. โSo I go after things, whether itโs men or jobs, Iโm literally in the business of rejection. Iโm like โOh, thatโs comfortable for me. Oh great, great, great. Let me just pursue that.โโ
โThatโs what Iโm used to,โ she added. โItโs normal for me. Itโs not healthy.โ
Her stepfather, whom she identifies in her book as โTrigger,โ โwould weigh me in the kitchen or threaten to lock the cupboards.โ
The plus-sized star now looks back on it with wisdom.
โWhy does my weight equate my worthiness?โ she said. โAnd as a 12-year-old kid, itโs like, how do you reconcile that in your mind?โ
People magazine reported some of what she shared in her book.
โWhen I was fourteen, Trigger began weighing me,โ Metz writes. โHeโd get the scale from the bathroom and clang it hard on the kitchen floor. โWell, get on the damn thing!โ Trigger would yell. โThis is what you need to know.โโ
She said during the podcast that experience โimpacts everything.โ
โIt was hard because I felt like I was singled out by him,โ she said. โHe didnโt really treat my younger sisters the same way. And again, not feeling chosen, or feeling chosen for the wrong thing.โ
