(CNN) โ€” Elon Musk says that he believes the US Postal Service and Amtrak need to be privatized and that โ€œwe should privatize anything that can reasonably be privatized.โ€

Speaking virtually at the Morgan Stanley Technology Media & Telecom conference, Musk said itโ€™s โ€œkind of embarrassingโ€ how other countries have โ€œway better passenger rail than we do,โ€ giving the example of bullet trains in China.

โ€œAmtrak is a sad situation. Itโ€™s like, if youโ€™re coming from another country, please donโ€™t use our national rail. It can leave you with a very bad impression of America,โ€ Musk said.

โ€œI think we should privatize anything that can be privatized, just so youโ€™ve got a feedback loop for improvement, is what happens when somethingโ€™s privatized,โ€ Musk said. โ€œBasically somethingโ€™s got to have some chance of going bankrupt or thereโ€™s not a good feedback loop for improvement.โ€

But Musk acknowledged that โ€œa bunch of these things require actions for Congress.โ€

Musk has tried to quash government-funded high-speed rail projects in the past. Ashlee Vance reported in his Musk biography that in 2013, the Tesla CEOโ€™s โ€œHyperloopโ€ proposal originated out of his โ€œhatred for Californiaโ€™s proposed high-speed rail systemโ€ because the train would allegedly โ€œbe the slowestโ€ bullet train yet โ€œat the highest cost per mile.โ€

While the Hyperloop project did end up launching (before being eventually shuttered), it was โ€œmore that he wanted to show people that more creative ideas were out thereโ€ and โ€œwith any luck, the high-speed rail would be canceled.โ€

Shortly after the 2024 election, the X account associated with the Department of Government Efficiency posted a list of what it said were flaws in Californiaโ€™s delayed high-speed rail project.

Musk did not expand on privatizing the postal service, although itโ€™s something Trump has long mused about.
