Jordan Chiles: Simone Biles 'left an impact on me'

November 01, 2024

Los Angeles (CNN) โ€” Jordan Chiles knew her friend was hurting. It was July 28, 2021, and while America was waking up to the shocking news that Simone Biles was withdrawing from the gymnastics all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympics, Chiles could only think about how devastated her teammate must be.

โ€œSheโ€™s not a quitter,โ€ Chiles told CNN in Tokyo at the time. โ€œBut โ€ฆ she knows her body more than anybody else.โ€

Itโ€™s no secret what happened next, and thatโ€™s precisely the point โ€“ instead of retreating from the spotlight, Biles openly shared her struggles with mental health, putting the issue front and center as one of the greatest athletes not only of her sport, but arguably of all time.

โ€œEverybodyโ€™s mental health journey is unique,โ€ Biles told CNNโ€™s Coy Wire during a recent interview alongside Chiles in Los Angeles. โ€œIโ€™m not the poster child for it, but Iโ€™ll support (anyoneโ€™s) mental health journey.โ€

โ€œNow people come up to me and theyโ€™re like, โ€˜Iโ€™ve been in therapy for the first time in my life, and thank you so much,โ€™โ€ Biles added. โ€œThereโ€™s power in that. And I just know Iโ€™m helping people out there.โ€

Chiles, a two-time Olympian in Tokyo and Paris, was quick to point out that sheโ€™s benefited directly from Bilesโ€™ example. The two were speaking during their recent Gold Over America Tour, which celebrated the successes of Team USAโ€™s gymnasts.

โ€œBeing in that position that she was in during that time frame and her being vulnerable, it just made it even better for, not just me, but everybody around us. (And) not just in our sport, but (for) people in general,โ€ Chiles said.

โ€œAnd having somebody like her, whether people see it or donโ€™t see it โ€“ and Iโ€™ve been behind the scenes of what sheโ€™s gone through โ€“ itโ€™s definitely cool to finally see that people are understanding where sheโ€™s coming from, not just as an athlete, but also as a human.โ€

Biles, now 27, began gymnastics at the age of six. Eleven Olympic and 30 World Championship medals later, if thereโ€™s one thing the most decorated gymnast of all time could tell her younger self, Biles said, it would be to โ€œask for help.โ€

โ€œThere is beauty in being vulnerable,โ€ she added.

No stranger to the spotlight, Simone Biles has used her platform to speak openly about mental health.

Chiles, 23, picked up on that willingness to embrace vulnerability, and has worked to emulate it in her own life. โ€œWhen I was younger, I did not want help from anybody,โ€ said Chiles, who will return to UCLA next year as a collegiate gymnast after winning the team all-around gold alongside Biles at the Paris Olympics.

She says sheโ€™s also learned the importance of โ€œstanding your ground.โ€

Itโ€™s about โ€œunderstanding that my story is my story,โ€ Chiles said. โ€œIโ€™m the one whoโ€™s writing it and I didnโ€™t learn to stand my ground until I met her (Biles).โ€

Itโ€™s a lesson Chiles says has become all the more important over the last few months, as her team is working to overturn a decision that took away her bronze medal in the individual floor event in Paris.

Jordan Chiles, pictured during her floor exercise routine in the qualification round at the 2024 Paris Olympics, says she's learned from teammate Simone Biles the importance of "standing your ground."

โ€œThings can be really, really hard in your life and things may be stripped from you and youโ€™re going to have to deal with that, and understand that you need to fight for what youโ€™re fighting for,โ€ she added. โ€œAnd thatโ€™s something that Iโ€™ve learned as well in the past three or four months just coming off of Paris.โ€

โ€œJust me being meโ€

In a sport where female athletes once โ€œpeaked at (age) 16,โ€ Biles said, having her still competing at the Olympics is a sign of progress in gymnastics. It also allows younger gymnasts, like Team USAโ€™s Hezly Rivera, who was 16 during this yearโ€™s Paris games, to learn from Biles.

โ€œIโ€™ve been in these girlsโ€™ shoes before,โ€ Biles said, โ€œso I know exactly what theyโ€™re going through,โ€ adding sheโ€™s there for a โ€œhelping hand โ€ฆ little pep talks โ€ฆ making them laugh, cheer(ing) them up, whatever they need โ€“ Iโ€™m there.โ€

Chiles again credited Biles for inspiring her own leadership style.

โ€œThatโ€™s just me being me. And I want the younger generation to understand that itโ€™s okay to be yourself when it comes to anything in life,โ€ Chiles said. โ€œBut I didnโ€™t learn that until it came from her. She taught me that.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve broken so many barriers in this sport,โ€ Biles added. โ€œWe have extensions and weโ€™ve got color in our hair, and itโ€™s really breaking the mold and knowing that it doesnโ€™t matter your background, where you come from, weโ€™re all capable of achieving amazing things.โ€
