At least 87 people killed in stampede at religious event in India, say local police

New Delhi (CNN) โ€” At least 27 people have been killed during a stampede at a religious gathering in Indiaโ€™s northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, according to local police and health officials.

Among those killed were 23 women, three children and one man, according to Rajesh Kumar Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police for the Etah district.

The incident happened at a prayer meeting, known as a satsang, in the Mughal Garhi village in the Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.
