(Reuters) -British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed "productive negotiations" towards a UK-U.S. economic prosperity deal in a phone call on Sunday evening, a Downing Street spokesperson said.

The leaders said negotiations will continue this week and agreed to stay in touch in the coming days, according to a Downing Street statement.

Britain was hoping to negotiate a deal with the U.S. to avoid a broader round of reciprocal tariffs.

On Friday, Trump said he was open to carving out deals with countries seeking to avoid U.S. tariffs, but those agreements would have to be negotiated after his administration announces reciprocal levies on April 2. Trump said countries including Britain had approached the U.S to try to cut deals and avert the reciprocal tariffs.
