Kaiser Permanente gave Cal State Fullerton's food pantry $75,000 to help feed hungry students. The money will buy lockers and add more diverse food choices to the pantry's shelves. Since 2018, the pantry has been dishing out fresh veggies and other basics to students in need. What started as a food truck has now found a home in the student union, feeding over 3,000 Titans last year.

"The gift to the ASI Food Pantry represents a significant step in supporting students’ well-being and academic success," said Talia Rodriguez, who runs the pantry.

Starting in December, students can stash their groceries in new fridges while they're stuck in class all day. The pantry's menu is getting an upgrade too, with more vegan options and international foods like noodles and tortillas.

“It is an honor for Kaiser Permanente to support Cal State Fullerton’s food pantry,” said Payman Roshan from Kaiser Permanente.

The ASI Food Pantry partners with Second Harvest Food Bank, the CSUF Campus Garden and the Arboretum and Botanical Garden at Cal State Fullerton. The pantry team also offers interview clothes, soap, and money tips to students.

Hidden in room 129, CSU Fullerton's food pantry provides students with essentials like eggs and soup in a judgment-free space. The initiative aims to support student health and academic success by alleviating food insecurity and enabling students to focus on their studies rather than their hunger.

Addressing the broader issue of financial struggles among college students, the pantry’s new global food selection reflects the diversity of Fullerton’s student body. Recently added lockers offer convenient access to fresh food, accommodating students’ busy schedules.

The pantry’s growing popularity highlights the persistent challenges students face in meeting basic needs. In response, institutions like CSU Fullerton are expanding efforts to combat hunger on campus.

By collaborating with local organizations and basic needs services, the pantry delivers comprehensive support, from food assistance to financial resources, enhancing the well-being of its student community.

Homicides decline over 25%, according to mayor's office

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday a decline of more than one-fourth in the number of homicides and people shot since she took office two years ago. Statistics released by the L.A. Police Department show murders are down 28.1% and 26.2% fewer people have been shot. Gang-related homicides were a particularly bright spot, down by 50% since 2022. City officials attributed the decline in part to programs like Summer Night Lights and Fall Friday Nights, which aim to create supervised spaces for young people at times when gang activities have traditionally been high. Over 316,000 people received food, programming,

Franklin Fire expands to 2,700 acres amid ongoing response efforts

The Franklin Fire in Malibu Canyon grew to more than 2,700 acres as of Tuesday near Pepperdine University.  The fire – driven by Santa Ana winds – started Monday and was first reported at 11 p.m. It threatens about 2,000 structures, forcing mandatory evacuations orders to be handed out. However, only a “minimal” number of homes have been destroyed, and no injuries have been reported.  There’s a high volume of dry brush, which contributed to the rapidly growing fire. The fire began in the midst of a “particularly dangerous situation red flag warning” issued by the National Weather Service. Los Angeles
