WASHINGTON D.C. — A Maryland man has been found guilty of the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her mother, as well as the attempted murder of his infant child, in a shooting over child support.
In the April 2021 shootings that claimed the lives of Ebony Wright and her mother, Wanda Wright, in Washington, D.C., Keanan Turner, 34, was convicted of a variety of offenses, including first-degree murder, as per the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington, D.C.
The investigation revealed that Ebony and Turner had been in a relationship when she got pregnant. Ebony was asked to terminate her pregnancy by Turner. Upon refusal, Turner ended all communication with her.
After the birth of her child, Ebony then sued Turner for child support in a D.C. Court. According to prosecutors, Turner had scheduled a meeting at the residence of Ebony Wright to meet with his four-month-old infant for the first time.
He abruptly fired his gun, striking Ebony in the head and her mother in the back of the head after spending approximately an hour with the family. He then allegedly shot Ebony's sister in the face.
"Prior to leaving the apartment, the defendant lit the custody paperwork on fire in an attempt to kill the child," read a part of the statement from prosecutors.
Ebony's sister, who survived the shooting, managed to save the baby from the burning apartment and call for help. Turner was later identified by his arm tattoo, caught on a doorbell camera as he ran from the scene.
A family fundraising page said the surviving sister, then a college student, planned to raise her orphaned nephew.
As per the U.S. Attorney's Office, Turner was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder while armed with aggravated circumstances, assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, attempted first-degree murder of a minor, second-degree cruelty to children, arson, and destruction of property. In October, he will be sentenced and may be sentenced to life imprisonment.
