The latest health fad exploding on TikTok is navel oiling, which involves massaging oil on the belly button and surrounding abdomen. Videos under the hashtag #naveloiling have amassed over 11.5 million views, as social media influencers tout a range of enticing health claims about this traditional practice. But medical experts caution that there is minimal to no scientific evidence backing these exaggerated assertions.

Also called navel pulling, navel oiling traces back thousands of years to Ayurvedic medicine traditions in India. Practitioners applied oils like ginger, peppermint, olive, coconut, and sesame to the navel area for purported therapeutic benefits. This ancient ritual has recently taken off in popularity on TikTok and Instagram.

As the trend spreads virally, so too have a rash of questionable claims about navel oiling's health impacts. In their exuberant videos, influencers have hailed it as a “miracle therapy” with the power to treat complex medical conditions ranging from hernias, cysts and fibroids to endometriosis. Others insist navel oiling can effectively help shed excess weight, reduce cortisol and relieve stress. Some entrepreneurial influencers have even launched products to sell, capitalizing on the navel oiling craze.

But women’s health experts assert that any claims of navel oils drastically improving serious health conditions are irresponsible and unsubstantiated. “Suggesting oil can cure these issues is detrimental to people suffering, as there is no scientific proof it works,” says Dr. Sarah Jenkins, a general practitioner and OB/GYN. She stresses that complex concerns like endometriosis require proven medical treatment, not DIY topical oils.

Proponents frequently cite the naval’s supposed “access” to over 70,000 veins and organs to explain alleged whole-body benefits. But this is anatomically impossible, says integrative medicine physician Dr. Gabrielle McCauley. In reality, the navel is simply scar tissue that remains after the umbilical cord falls off. It does not grant access to a complex internal vein network.

So what does the science actually show regarding popular navel oiling claims? Right now, credible studies demonstrating weight loss are nonexistent. “Losing weight is about overall calorie balance and metabolism, not applying oil,” explains registered dietitian nutritionist Amari Thom. While mindful massage could indirectly reduce cortisol-related belly fat for some, concrete diet and exercise changes would still be necessary for lasting impact.

When it comes to stress relief, it is plausible that the ritual nature of navel oiling could provide calming benefits, if approached as a meditative act of self-care. “Anecdotally, gentle touch therapies like massage improve mood for some people,” notes mental health counselor Rebecca Wong. However, effects would vary based on the individual and practice would need to be ongoing, not a one-time fix.

Overall, experts emphasize that navel oiling appears unlikely to cause direct harm, but its propagated advantages lack scientific substantiation within medical literature so far. They caution strongly against relying on social media influencers over credentialed professionals for health advice. “Work with an evidence-based doctor to create an integrated self-care plan meeting your individual needs,” advises Dr. Jenkins.

Rather than pin hopes on the latest unproven social media cure-all, time-tested lifestyle approaches offer a reliable path for improving one's holistic health. Eating nutritious whole foods, staying active, reducing alcohol intake, and proactively managing stress remain the pillars of wellbeing, rather than hastily jumping to embrace viral fads. Healthy skepticism is warranted when bold health claims arise on TikTok and Instagram untethered to scientific rigor.

With no shortcuts to optimal wellness, putting in the work - mentally, physically, emotionally - is necessary for sustainable results and growth. But by judiciously incorporating new practices that research ultimately supports, people can thoughtfully evolve their self-care repertoires. As novel health trends enjoy their moments in the spotlight, maintaining perspective allows harnessing what provides true value while steering clear of exaggerated hype.
