East Hollywood has earned international recognition as one of the world's coolest neighborhoods, securing the 26th spot out of 38 on Time Out magazine's annual global ranking for 2024.

According to Time Out's latest report, the designation highlights the area's evolution from an understated section of Los Angeles to a vibrant district known for its late-night dining scene, cultural diversity, and artistic community.

East Hollywood's selection was based on input from Time Out's global editors and experts, who evaluated neighborhoods worldwide based on cultural vibrancy, community atmosphere, and distinctive character.

The neighborhood, which includes Thai Town and Virgil Village enclaves, has distinguished itself through a combination of authentic cultural experiences and outstanding culinary experiences. Thai Town features James Beard-nominated restaurant Jitlada and Sanamluang Cafe, which serves customers until 2 a.m.

The area's transformation has been particularly notable in Virgil Village, where artisanal establishments have taken root alongside traditional businesses. The sub-neighborhood now hosts a mix of bakeries, local shops, and coffee establishments that cater to the area's growing remote workforce.

East Hollywood's central location, situated near popular districts like Silverlake and Echo Park, has contributed to its appeal among young creative professionals seeking a community-oriented environment within Los Angeles.

The neighborhood's dining landscape reflects its multicultural identity. Thai Town maintains its position as a hub for Asian cuisine, with establishments like the Sapp Coffee Shop, known for its boat noodles, and the Thai Street Food Market. The area's culinary offerings extend beyond Asian fare to include Middle Eastern cuisine at Saffy's, operated by the team behind restaurant Bestia.

The nightlife scene encompasses venues ranging from music venues to wine bars. The Virgil hosts live music performances, including Soul Fire Funk Club events, while Jumbo's Clown Room presents burlesque shows. For wine enthusiasts, the neighborhood offers venues such as Melody Wine Bar and Voodoo Vin.

East Hollywood represents one component of the larger Hollywood district, which includes three distinct sections. West Hollywood maintains its reputation for upscale establishments and LGBTQIA+ venues, while Central Hollywood continues to draw tourists to landmarks like the Walk of Fame and The Chinese Theater.

The Time Out ranking considers factors such as walkability, cultural authenticity, and nightlife options when evaluating global neighborhoods. East Hollywood's placement on the list positions it among international destinations recognized for its cultural significance and community appeal.

The neighborhood's development has maintained a balance between new establishments and existing cultural institutions. Local fixtures like Courage Bagels have developed loyal followings, often drawing long lines of customers. At the same time, Cafecito Organico provides outdoor seating that serves as both a workspace and a social hub.

The neighborhood offers multiple late-night dining options for visitors and residents. Thai Town establishments like Sanamluang Cafe serve authentic cuisine during extended hours, while newer restaurants like Woon serve Chinese-inspired dishes.

The recognition from Time Out arrives as East Hollywood continues to evolve while maintaining its cultural heritage. The neighborhood's placement on the global list acknowledges its development as a destination that combines authentic ethnic cuisine, artistic venues, and contemporary dining establishments.

When betrayal works in our favor: New UCLA study reveals the complexity of trust

Would you trust someone who betrayed others—if it worked in your favor?
