A portion of Interstate 5 running from Parker Road in Castaic to Grapevine Road in Lebec was closed Sunday night due to snow and rain. As of Monday morning, traffic is still blocked in both directions.
The closed portion spans almost the entirety of the ‘Grapevine’ connecting the Central Valley with the Los Angeles area through Tejon Pass.
“The Grapevine remains closed due to ice buildup on the road surface. Caltrans is working to clear the lanes of ice so motorists can pass through safely,” California Highway Patrol said. “There is no estimated time of reopening the freeway.”
According to Caltrans, reopening will be dependent on weather conditions. Current weather predictions for Gorman, near the summit of the pass, project a mixture of snow and rain through the early afternoon. It may take additional time for crews to clear the road after snow stops falling.
Pacific Coast Highway was also closed. Travel is prohibited between McClure Tunnel in Santa Monica and Sweetwater Canyon Road in Malibu due to fire conditions.
Those driving to the Central Coast should use the 101, while access to the Central Valley is possible via the Antelope Valley Freeway.
The Grapevine was also closed last week due to the outbreak of the Hughes Fire, which has burned more than 10,000 acres near the highway. That blaze is now more than 95% contained, according to Cal Fire.
