Two inmates facing murder charges were apprehended earlier this month, just one day after their escape from the Claiborne County Detention Center in Mississippi.
According to NBC News, Tyrekennel Collins, 24, and Dezarrious Johnson, 18, were captured at an abandoned residence following their breakout early the next morning. The sheriff's office put the arrest on Facebook Live, with video showing officers walking the two men to a squad car.
Chief Deputy Christy Sykes explained that Collins and Johnson climbed through a panel in the jail's common area ceiling. They accessed a window and used bedsheets to drop to the ground. Other inmates alerted jail staff to the escape immediately.
State investigators told people to steer clear of the escapees, calling them dangerous. Officers didn't think the pair had any weapons when they escaped.
Collins was being held on charges from Copiah County, reportedly in connection with the 2023 killing of his cousin. Johnson faced charges from Jefferson County. Both now face additional charges related to their escape.
This wasn't the first jailbreak through the ceiling, Sykes stated that "It's been an issue and we're working closely with the board of supervisors to get this taken care of as soon as possible."
Chief Deputy Sykes stated that the escape would lead to new charges against both inmates. Sykes mentioned that previous escapes at the facility had also involved inmates getting out through a ceiling panel.
Authorities noted that Johnson injured his leg during the escape, resulting in a bad limp, according to an earlier Facebook post by the sheriff's office.
