Inside Celine Dion's battle with stiff-person syndrome

Inside Celine Dion's battle with stiff-person syndrome
July 09, 2024
Sophia Martinez - LA Post

In her latest documentary "I Am: Celine Dion," the iconic singer reveals the private challenges she's faced with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological condition, offering an unfiltered window into her personal life. The incredibly intimate film, helmed by director Irene Taylor, captures a heartbreaking moment where the 55-year-old Dion experiences a severe episode, her body stiffening and rendering her immobile.

According to interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Taylor said, Dion was "teary-eyed through the whole" 100-minute documentary when she watched it for the first time. Despite the emotional and sensitive moments, Dion did not want any changes made to the film, including the poignant scene depicting her medical episode.

In the scene, Dion's body locks up, rendering her unable to move or speak. Her care team administers medication and monitors her condition without calling 911. Taylor, who witnessed the traumatic moment unfold, described it as "very upsetting" but acknowledged that Dion felt validated seeing herself in that state, believing it would help others understand SPS.

Dion and Taylor had not discussed filming any potential health issues beforehand, as the singer's episodes were infrequent. However, Dion had instructed Taylor to continue filming without seeking permission if an incident occurred.

The documentary serves as a teaching tool for Dion's twin sons, allowing her to demonstrate the extent of her condition and its impact on her body. Taylor noted that Dion's health improved over the year-long filming process, attributing it to receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

Throughout the filmmaking process, Dion placed immense trust in Taylor, allowing her to tell the story without external commentary. Taylor was overwhelmed by Dion's candor and openness, recalling how the singer insisted, "Allow me to narrate my own story, unfiltered, and I'll pour my heart out for this project."

The documentary, which premiered on June 17, is set to stream on Prime Video from June 25, providing fans worldwide with insight into Dion's personal and professional life.
