A bizarre family dispute over smelly feet led to gunfire in Burlington, Iowa, landing a 48-year-old man behind bars for allegedly shooting his dad in the face.
Police arrested David Carpenter on Aug. 11 after gunshots rang out at a Burlington home around 9:30 PM, local police reported. Carpenter allegedly called police and admitted to the shooting.
The criminal complaint states that William Carpenter, the suspect’s father, told police the argument started when he called out his son's stinky feet. Things got heated, and David allegedly threatened to shoot his dad before rushing off to grab a gun from his room.
Police said David stormed back into the living room, where his father was sitting in his motorized scooter, and continued to yell at his father about guns. Then, David supposedly pulled the weapon from behind his back, aimed it at his father's face, and accidentally fired, according to the report. According to the police, David’s two children, both under the age of 14, were in the house at the time of the incident.Authorities confirmed William was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
David is being held at the Des Moines County Jail for a cash-only bond of $100,000. He's looking at attempted murder and child endangerment charges.Des Moines County Courthouse is setting up a preliminary hearing for 2 p.m. on Aug 21.
