Liam Payne, a singer and former band member of One Direction, died Wednesday at 31-years-old after falling from a third story balcony at a hotel in Argentina, according to local police.
His death happened at a hotel on Costa Rica Street in the Palermo neighborhood, according to CNN. There were “several witnesses” of the incident, according to TMZ. Payne had reportedly been acting erratic in the lobby earlier in the day, according to TMZ.
Payne was best known as a member of boyband One Direction that was active from 2010-2017. Other members of the band are Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. The band first formed on the TV show “The X Factor” as each member competed as individual acts and were later put together in one group during the competition. Payne was only 16-years-old at the time the group formed.
One Direction announced in 2015 they were taking a hiatus. Their fifth and final studio album “Made in the A.M.” was released on Sept. 22, 2015.
Payne released his first solo album “LP1” in 2019. He released an LP in March called “Teardrops.”
Payne leaves behind one son, who was born in 2017.
He was recently in Argentina to support Horan at a concert earlier this month. The members from One Direction reunited at the show.
In recent years, Payne has been open about his struggles with depression, suicidal ideation, and addiction.
It’s not clear at this time how Payne fell from the balcony. The investigation is ongoing.
