A man was arrested early Thursday morning after allegedly attempting to hijack a self-driving taxi belonging to the service Waymo in downtown Los Angeles.
The attempted theft occurred at around 1 a.m. near the intersection of South Hill Street and Fifth Street.
Police approached the man behind a riot shield when he refused to get out of the Waymo taxi, KTLA reported.
According to media reports, an officer opened the door of the taxi and pulled the man out. He was arrested shortly afterward.
The man's name and motive were not immediately available.
This is not the first time that a passenger has attempted to hijack a Waymo vehicle. A similar incident took place in March 2024, also in Los Angeles. In May of that year, a crowd set fire to one of the company's robotaxis in San Francisco.
