Several new measles outbreaks have emerged across multiple states including California and Michigan. Additionally, seven cases were identified among students at the same elementary school in Florida. These incidents highlight how the highly contagious measles virus continues to spread in communities around the country. Matthew Ferrari, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University, aptly describes the situation as a “pile of firewood” with each outbreak acting as a match, increasing the risk of a larger conflagration.
