A Kentucky mom accused of killing her two children plans to use an insanity defense in her upcoming trial, according to court documents filed. Tiffanie Lucas, charged with the murder of her sons Maurice Baker Jr., 6, and Jayden Howard, 9, intends to introduce expert evidence related to her mental state at the time of the alleged offense.
The motion, filed in Bullitt Circuit Court on Sept. 11, states that Lucas's defense attorney will "assert a defense of insanity at the time of the alleged offense." The document also indicates plans to present evidence of a "mental disease, mental defect, or other mental condition" bearing on both guilt and punishment.
The event took place in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, on Nov. 8, 2023. The police discovered the two boys killed by gunfire in a bedroom inside their house. During a hearing in November, a detective stated that when the authorities got to the location, Lucas came out of her residence and fell down on a neighbor's driveway.
During questioning, Lucas reportedly told police the incident "was an accident," according to local news outlets WHAS 11, WDRB, and WAVE. The detective's testimony provided insight into the immediate aftermath of the alleged child murder case.
