A grandmother in Ohio shot her infant granddaughter in the face intentionally and showed no remorse. Mia Harris, 43, pleaded guilty to felony assault on Tuesday, September 17, for the violent attack that occurred last December in Liberty Township.
Court documents state Harris went on a violent rampage that ended with her shooting her granddaughter Myra. It began when Harris shot at the baby's bedroom door with a handgun. She then broke down the door and shot the baby in the eye. She didn't stop there - Harris punched someone and attempted to shoot another family member at close range but missed.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones said it all started with a family dispute at their house. The situation escalated when Harris grabbed a gun and turned on her own family. The most disturbing aspect is how Harris seemed indifferent about her actions. When questioned by the police, she coldly stated Myra "wasn't her grandbaby" and replied "sorry, not sorry" about shooting the infant.
Detective Daniel Turner testified in December and revealed that Harris harbored deep resentment towards her family. She believed that they were attempting to "take all of her money and then leave," and she was determined not to allow that to happen, adding that Harris wanted to "crucify" her family, according to WCPO.
Myra's mother called 911 in the middle of the night, begging them to save her baby. The police found the infant in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the eye. They rushed the baby to the hospital, where she underwent two surgeries. Against all odds, the baby survived and is doing better than expected.
Harris fled after the shooting but didn't get far before witnesses identified her. "This is one of the most disgusting, vile criminal acts I've ever seen, shooting a 6-month-old baby," Jones told WXIX at the time. "What makes it even worse is this the baby's grandmother," Jones said.
Harris accepted a plea deal and admitted guilt to felony assault for shooting her granddaughter. The other charges relating to the assaults on family members were dropped as part of the deal. She could face up to 15 years when the judge sentences her on October 29. Harris is being held at the Butler County Jail.
