Scarlett Johansson and her Avengers cast mates have a group chat that she hopes nobody ever gets to read. The Black Widow star, 39, spoke to The New York Times about her latest movie Fly Me to the Moon when she mentioned her private text chain. She didn’t deny the group chat exists but made it clear she wants to keep their conversations a secret
“Yes, that’s true. But hopefully, nobody will ever read it,” Johansson said. She added, “Everything goes on in there. I mean, really. If somebody’s gotten terrible reviews, that could be something that comes up.”
The Avengers group chat includes Johansson her male costars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Chris Hemsworth, and Mark Ruffalo. The group has starred in four movies between 2012 and 2019, while also in separate Marvel projects. Despite retiring her Black Widow suit in 2021, Johansson insists that the group is as close-knit as ever.
“We’ve been through an incredible experience over a decade plus of time. It was life-changing for all of us,” Johansson said. She also noted the group’s responsiveness, mentioning that most members typically reply within minutes when the chain is active.
The superhero cast bond extends beyond on-screen chemistry. Jeremy Renner who plays Hawkeye backed up Johansson’s claims in his chat with Men’s Health. “Oh, f--- yeah, it’s a real thing — it’s not just for Instagram. We f-----’ hate that s—," Renner said.
Renner elaborated on the group’s dynamics, revealing, “We have a family chat and have for a long time. When you work with people - look, we all went through a culturally significant experience together. And there are divorces and marriages and babies; a lot of stuff happened in these 12 years.”
The actor further described the unique nature of their relationship, comparing their on-screen appearances to a costume party, while highlighting the genuine connections formed off-screen. “There’s a brotherhood or sisterhood or whatever the heck you want to call it. I just call it love,” Renner added.
As Johansson promotes her latest film, “Fly Me to the Moon,” currently in theaters, the revelation about the Avengers group text offers fans a glimpse into the enduring relationships forged among the Marvel stars. While their conversations remain private, the actors’ comments suggest a strong bond that extends well beyond their superhero personas.
Fly Me to the Moon is out in theaters.
