Blink, and you might miss them—but stay, and you’ll be treated to the big charm of our ten small towns on Highway 1 in California's picturesque Central Coast. Here, you’ll find fun, flavor, and fantastic views—plus plenty of fins, flippers and feathers, too! Sip bold wines in a quaint tasting room, or find an epic surf spot where the harbor seals are your only competition for waves. Marvel at a kaleidoscope of tens of thousands of Monarch butterflies, tucked just off the roadway. Or glimpse through a tiny window to witness the unparalleled grandeur of Big Sur’s “million-dollar view.” Exploring the seaside hamlets and rolling vineyards on California’s Central Coast, it’s easy to see why travelers come back again and again.

Whether chasing a flavor, a sunset, an adrenaline rush or the call of a peregrine falcon, visitors never run out of discoveries to be made here. Like the Pacific horizon, their delights are endless — and because they’re all just 15 minutes apart or less, they’re also within reach.

Whether you devote one day or an entire stay to exploring them, these ten little communities will supply you with larger-than-life experiences and memories to last a lifetime. Here, we uncover the views, thrills, tastes and wildlife that make our stretch of Highway 1 a big-time small wonder.

Epic Views

Wide-open vistas are a hallmark of Highway 1—and with so much untouched coastline, we think ours are particularly stunning. At Ragged Point, the elevated view from the cliffside pergola provides a picture-perfect postcard of the splendor of Big Sur's pristine natural state and ethereal beauty. In Avila Beach, nearly every restaurant along the promenade boasts an ocean-sunset view. Try Ocean Grill for panoramic vistas that extend across the Avila Bay. (If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a migrating whale or dolphins.)

A walk along the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk in Cambria takes in rugged cliffs, wildflowers and cypress trees, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary offshore. You might spy a whale spouting offshore, sea lions playing in the surf, active tidepools or busy sandpipers. At 1,347 feet, Valencia Peak in Montana de Oro State Park is the tallest point, offering 360-degree views and spectacular sunsets on clear days.

Exciting Adventures

Highway 1 has adventures for every kind of traveler, whether it’s exploring tidepools or loop-de-looping in an aerobatic biplane ride. The picturesque coastline in Oceano makes a terrific setting for horseback riding on the sand, provided by Pacific Dunes Riding Ranch. Or get your thrills soaring above Oceano's vast dunes in a vintage open cockpit biplane with Banner Airways.

Strap into a military Hummer for an extreme off-roading adventure over the massive Oceano Dunes complex. This tour isn’t just about adventure, though—you’ll also get wide-open views of the Pacific and its powerful waves.

Wildlife Viewing

Watching for incredible wildlife on Highway 1 is often as simple as pulling over and staying present. Gray whales, blue whales, humpback whales and even orcas can be seen migrating along the coastline. Come with your binoculars to any section of our coastline, and chances are good that you’ll spy a flipper, a tail, or a spout.

The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery provides a rare glimpse into the lives of majestic Northern Elephant Seals. Thanks to the volume of elephant seals that migrate here, it’s considered one of the best places in the world to view them. Watch the elephant seals come ashore to birth their pups and mate during this time.

When William Randolph Hearst built Hearst Castle in the early 1900s, he included a private zoo. Today, zebras remain from that zoo and roam freely on the ranch near Highway 1 in San Simeon. With diverse species and habitats, there are lots of opportunities to see wildlife, from Monarch butterflies to sea otters.

Big Wines

It’s easy to find spectacular wine on Highway 1—you just have to know where to look. Edna Valley focuses on chardonnay and pinot noir, but offers other varietals too. The cool ocean breezes make a perfect place for growing grapes.

In Avila Beach, visit Sinor-LaVallee and Peloton Cellars, just steps from the ocean. Or head inland to family-friendly Kelsey See Canyon Winery. Follow the bubbling Sparkling Wine Trail to sample a wide range of sparkling styles and varietals. And don’t miss the breweries, distilleries and nightlife that round out the options for imbibing.

The seaside hamlets, rolling vineyards and wide-open vistas of the Central Coast supply larger-than-life experiences. Whether you seek views, adventure, wildlife or wine, Highway 1 serves it all up in delicious bite-sized portions. These small towns boast big charm that will stay with you long after you leave.

Homicides decline over 25%, according to mayor's office

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday a decline of more than one-fourth in the number of homicides and people shot since she took office two years ago. Statistics released by the L.A. Police Department show murders are down 28.1% and 26.2% fewer people have been shot. Gang-related homicides were a particularly bright spot, down by 50% since 2022. City officials attributed the decline in part to programs like Summer Night Lights and Fall Friday Nights, which aim to create supervised spaces for young people at times when gang activities have traditionally been high. Over 316,000 people received food, programming,

Franklin Fire expands to 2,700 acres amid ongoing response efforts

The Franklin Fire in Malibu Canyon grew to more than 2,700 acres as of Tuesday near Pepperdine University.  The fire – driven by Santa Ana winds – started Monday and was first reported at 11 p.m. It threatens about 2,000 structures, forcing mandatory evacuations orders to be handed out. However, only a “minimal” number of homes have been destroyed, and no injuries have been reported.  There’s a high volume of dry brush, which contributed to the rapidly growing fire. The fire began in the midst of a “particularly dangerous situation red flag warning” issued by the National Weather Service. Los Angeles
