US safety board opening probe into Florida SUV accident that killed 9

(Reuters) -The National Transportation Safety Board said it is opening an investigation after an SUV in Belle Glade, Florida, drove into a canal late on Monday resulting in at least nine deaths, including six children.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said four people died at the scene and five died after being transported to a local hospital.

A tenth person who was in the vehicle remains hospitalized. The sheriff's department is investigating the accident and did not respond to requests for more details.

ABC News, citing the sheriff's office report on the accident, reported on Tuesday that the SUV crashed into the canal after missing a left turn in the road for an unknown reason. The car hit a guardrail and landed upside down in the canal, with water up to the wheels.

Six children aged 1 to 14 were killed in the crash, ABC reported.

Three women, including a 56-year-old who was the driver, were also killed. A 26-year-old male passenger was the only survivor.
