Patrick Renna, most recognized for his notable performance as Ham in the 1993 coming-of-age baseball movie "The Sandlot," has gained significant attention on TikTok for his dance videos. Now 44, the father of two has teamed up with childhood friends Caige and Cru Moore to perform choreographed dances to trending songs and NFL theme songs.
The group's NFL-themed dance video has garnered over 6 million views since it was posted last year. Most recently, they created a dance to the NFL on Prime Video theme song after the NFL itself called them out for not including it. "We're very red and sweaty in this one," said Renna, referring to the intense choreography required for their latest video.
According to Renna, the idea for the dance videos came from a friend who suggested TikTok dancing would be a good avenue for him. Renna agreed to give it a try, but only if his two "Chubby Ginger" friends would join him.
The trio relies on Cru Moore's wife, actress Lynsey Moore, to adapt and rehearse the viral dances to suit their skill levels. "She will either dumb down some of these dances so that we can actually physically do them, or she kind of alters them a little and then is the one yelling at us for an hour straight to get it together and be in sync," explained Renna.
Naming themselves XL (Renna), XXL (Caige Moore), and XXXL (Cru Moore), the men appear to have an easy camaraderie in their videos. However, Renna admitted Caige often tries to upstage him as the lead dancer, while Cru can be "lackluster" and gets called out by his wife during rehearsals. The guys typically practice while their combined seven kids are at school, though Caige's daughter will sometimes watch and even recommend trending dances for them to try.
Their lighthearted approach has earned them attention from creators of the original dances, like Lizzo, who attempted to give Renna one-on-one coaching after their popular video set to her song "About Damn Time." He's still working on perfecting the moves.
Now a dad of two boys, 6-year-old Flynn and 3-year-old Liam, Renna is making family his first priority. He relishes opportunities to coach his kids’ sports teams, knowing it will allow for bonding time. Reflecting on the father-son dynamic in “The Sandlot,” Renna doesn’t want to look back wishing he had spent more time with his own children.
Renna sees early signs of athletic talent in his sons. Liam already kicks a soccer ball aggressively, while Flynn started T-ball but refused to continue without Dad as coach. Renna also indulges in classic movie situations, including smacking a steak on Flynn’s face when he sustained a baseball injury reminiscent of Ham’s mishap in “The Sandlot.”
Almost three decades later, "The Sandlot" continues to be one of the most memorable baseball films for kids from the 1990s. Renna's depiction of the charming and lively Ham well captured the enthusiasm and happiness of summers in one's childhood, establishing the film's place in popular culture history.
Today, Renna is proving he still has that youthful exuberance by embracing internet trends and giving dads everywhere memorable moments of their own. His TikTok dance videos breathe new life into his image as a beloved star and introduce him to younger generations.
Renna shows no signs of slowing down, promising more dance content as long as his friends will join him. For the former child actor, going viral is just another way to make the most of life's simple pleasures.
