A pregnant teen's death has rocked South Carolina, but police said they’ve made an arrest after months of dead ends.
Police said they found Maylashia Hogg, 17, dead in Barnwell County on Feb. 18. Officials said Hogg had been stabbed multiple times with a sharp-edged weapon. She was scheduled to be induced on Valentine's Day and couldn't wait to meet her baby girl, Londyn Charity.
On July 1, South Carolina officials announced they captured Jacqueline Reid, 62, and charged her with two counts of murder in the teen's death. During the search of Reid's residence, authorities discovered what has been deemed as "forensic evidence" pertaining to the crime; however, specific information is being withheld at this time.
Police Chief Michael Butts, spoke to the town after Reid's arrest, asking everyone to keep Hogg's family in their thoughts. "We must continue to care for each other, to honor Maylashia and Londyn's memories, and come together to heal."
As the legal process progresses, numerous questions remain unanswered. It is unclear whether Reid has made a plea or has legal representation. The District Attorney's office has their work cut out for them, building a case from months of detective work.
Barnwell County has really come together for Hogg's family, holding vigils, raising money, and setting up support groups. Local schools and youth groups are keeping Hogg’s memory alive with scholarships and programs in her name.
