Ysabel Jurado and Adrin Nazarian will begin their terms on the Los Angeles City Council Monday, more than a month after they won runoff elections in the 14th and Second districts.
The official ceremony will take place behind closed doors, with the City Clerk administering the oaths of office. On Tuesday, a ceremonial public swearing-in will take place during the council’s meeting.
Nazarian will succeed Paul Krekorian — for whom he once served as chief of staff — as Council Member for the Second District. Krekorian retired this year due to the role’s term limit.
Prior to that, Nazarian was a member of the California State Assembly from 2012 to 2022, representing the 46th District.
The runoff election saw Nazarian triumph over Jillian Burgos. He received endorsements from rep. Adam Schiff, mayor Karen Bass, and the L.A. Times. On Nov. 5, Nazarian received 53.84% of the vote.
Jurado, meanwhile, presented herself as a sharp change from her predecessor. Kevin de León, who had represented the 14th District since 2020, was embroiled in scandal following the 2022 release of an audio recording.
During the recorded meeting, he and other councillors made remarks which were widely perceived as racist. De León, in particular, claimed that Black Americans were overrepresented in the city’s politics. The councillors also agreed to gerrymander the L.A. electoral map in order to ensure their re-elections.
In the aftermath of the recording’s release, popular pressure mounted for the councillors recorded to resign. Council members Nury Martinez and Ron Herrera eventually stepped down, while de León and Gil Cedillo remained in their roles.
Jurado, a progressive tenants’ rights attorney, defeated de León by a margin of 57. In a statement posted after her win, Jurado thanked the community organizers who aided her campaign, and compared her opponent to Donald Trump.
Councilwoman Heather Hutt is also beginning her first full term, though she had been serving on the Council since 2022 as a replacement for Herb Wesson. Hutt, along with the other incumbents, was sworn in last week along with the other incumbents who won re-election.
