Beat the burn: Dermatologists' top tips for treating sunburns

Beat the burn: Dermatologists' top tips for treating sunburns

Amid California midday, countless residents relish the abundant sunlight the state offers. However, prolonged exposure without adequate precautions can lead to painful sunburns, often accompanied by blistering.

Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, a dermatologist based in New York City, explains that individuals with lighter skin tones are prone to quicker sunburn development due to their diminished melanin levels. Melanin serves as a natural protection against the sun's strong UV rays. However, he warns that anyone might get burnt if they don't utilize sufficient sunscreen.

The skin reacts to sunburns distinctly from one person to the next. While some burns surface rapidly after brief sun contact, others incubate over hours before flaring up. Checking for symptoms like redness, swelling, itching, pain, blistering, oozing and peeling can confirm a burn.

Utilizing science-backed treatment methods can help minimize sunburn duration and discomfort during the healing process. With diligent TLC, you can bounce back from burnt skin woes more swiftly.

According to California dermatologist Dr. Stefani Kappel, slathering on moisturizers containing ceramides after bathing helps repair the skin barrier compromised by burns. CeraVe and Cetaphil make affordable, dermatologist-recommended ceramide cream options to treat sunburn.

Soothing gels like aloe vera can also offer cooling anti-inflammatory relief, thanks to compounds like polysaccharides and gibberellins. Other calming homemade remedies are Greek yogurt masks or virgin coconut oil. The healthy fats and probiotics within these ingredients help accelerate skin barrier restoration.

It’s imperative not to pick or scrub peeling skin post-burn, as this can worsen the damage and delay healing. Gentle cleansing and moisturizing should be the focus while waiting out a burn’s lifespan. Soaking in an Aveeno colloidal oatmeal bath can comfort parched skin sans abrasion.

To counter the inflammation and heat wafting from a burn, alternate wrapped ice packs with lukewarm showers or baths. Over-the-counter NSAID medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, and Naproxen can help mitigate inflammatory pathways causing swelling and discomfort. Redness relief creams containing anti-inflammatory components like oat milk, feverfew and licochalcone, such as Lancer Redness Relief Intense and Eucerin After Sun Lotion, also help calm irritation.

In more severe burn cases, prescription steroid creams or oral medications may be required to hasten healing, cites Dr. Rokhsar. Silvadene cream is often prescribed post-burn to quicken re-epithelization and closure of affected skin. Advanced modalities like LED red light therapy demonstrate potential for accelerating skin cell regeneration, though efficacy research on LED for sunburn is limited.

Markedly, it’s wise to sidestep aggravating skincare ingredients like retinol, alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin C, or abrasive exfoliants while burnt skin recovers. Even typically gentle products like benzoyl peroxide for acne should be avoided so as not to overtax sensitive areas. Delicate cleansers like mild hair and body wash help limit stripping.

With diligent moisture healing methods, most sunburns start fading within days, sparing patients from interminable discomfort. However, California’s idyllic climate beckons residents outside daily– calling for vigilant sun safeguards so we can enjoy extended outdoor time year-round without hindrance.

Preventative measures are foremost--seeking shade during peak UV hours, covering up with sun-protective clothing, wearing a wide-brim hat, and bright-lensed eyewear outdoors can hugely limit burn risks. Apply broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen across exposed areas 30 minutes before sun exposure, retouching every 80 minutes.

Sunburns can be excruciating yet avoidable occurrences that detract from outdoor living utopia. Per dermatology experts, prompt moisture healing techniques help minimize the hindrance of burns when they strike unexpectedly. And doubling down on preventative steps equips residents to soak up abundant sunny days ahead in our golden state worry-free.

Homicides decline over 25%, according to mayor's office

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday a decline of more than one-fourth in the number of homicides and people shot since she took office two years ago. Statistics released by the L.A. Police Department show murders are down 28.1% and 26.2% fewer people have been shot. Gang-related homicides were a particularly bright spot, down by 50% since 2022. City officials attributed the decline in part to programs like Summer Night Lights and Fall Friday Nights, which aim to create supervised spaces for young people at times when gang activities have traditionally been high. Over 316,000 people received food, programming,

Franklin Fire expands to 2,700 acres amid ongoing response efforts

The Franklin Fire in Malibu Canyon grew to more than 2,700 acres as of Tuesday near Pepperdine University.  The fire – driven by Santa Ana winds – started Monday and was first reported at 11 p.m. It threatens about 2,000 structures, forcing mandatory evacuations orders to be handed out. However, only a “minimal” number of homes have been destroyed, and no injuries have been reported.  There’s a high volume of dry brush, which contributed to the rapidly growing fire. The fire began in the midst of a “particularly dangerous situation red flag warning” issued by the National Weather Service. Los Angeles
