A Los Angeles court sentenced Rebecca Grossman, a wealthy Westlake Village resident, to 15 years to life in prison for a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in 2020. Grossman was found guilty of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, and fleeing the scene after her Mercedes struck and killed two young brothers, Mark and Jacob Iskander, aged 11 and 8, in a crosswalk.

In 2020, Rebecca Grossman's Mercedes struck and killed two brothers, Mark (11) and Jacob (8) Iskander, in a Westlake Village crosswalk. The incident occurred in the affluent Los Angeles suburb, drawing significant attention from the local community.

It was revealed that Grossman, whose husband is a prominent burn doctor in LA, was speeding excessively when the incident occurred. Her car's data recorder showed she was traveling at 81 mph at one point. She applied the brakes, but 73 mph was still far too fast. The outcome was inevitable.

The District Attorney pursued all possible charges against Grossman. In February, the jury quickly found her guilty on all counts, including murder, manslaughter, and fleeing the scene.

Judge Brandolino imposed a severe sentence on Grossman. He gave her two concurrent 15-years-to-life sentences for killing the children. He added three more years for fleeing, to be served concurrently with the other sentences.

The judge was direct in his criticism of Grossman. He condemned her reckless behavior and called the entire incident senseless. Many residents following the case agreed with the judge's assessment.

The sentence provides some closure for Westlake Village and beyond. The Iskanders' tragedy has sparked discussions about protecting children from reckless drivers.

Prosecutors used Grossman's own vehicle against her, thanks to its data recorder. The device provided clear evidence of her speeding and last-minute braking. Nowadays, this technology is invaluable in court, corroborating eyewitness accounts.

Grossman's case has also renewed debates about privilege and accountability. Throughout the trial, people couldn't help but discuss Grossman's luxurious lifestyle. However, her wealth and connections ultimately couldn't shield her from imprisonment.

Westlake Village will never be the same after this tragedy. The upscale suburb received a stark reminder that misfortune can strike anywhere.

With Grossman now incarcerated, the Iskanders are attempting to rebuild their lives. While nothing can bring the boys back, the severe sentence demonstrates that reckless driving has serious consequences.

This case serves as a powerful reminder that driving is not to be taken lightly - it can alter lives in an instant. This tragedy will likely be referenced in road safety discussions for years to come.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday a decline of more than one-fourth in the number of homicides and people shot since she took office two years ago. Statistics released by the L.A. Police Department show murders are down 28.1% and 26.2% fewer people have been shot. Gang-related homicides were a particularly bright spot, down by 50% since 2022. City officials attributed the decline in part to programs like Summer Night Lights and Fall Friday Nights, which aim to create supervised spaces for young people at times when gang activities have traditionally been high.
