The police arrested a 23-year-old man after his ex was found dead, wrapped in a sheet, in a car at a Gulfport graveyard. People are alarmed and wondering how this individual was released from jail so recently.
Police doing a wellness check discovered 22-year-old Lauren Johansen's body at the cemetery. The Sun Herald and WLOX report that police found her cut up and bundled in a sheet.
Bricen Rivers, the suspect, fled when the police arrived. After a few hours of searching, they caught Rivers on Wednesday and booked him into the Harrison County jail for murder.
This incident occurred shortly after Rivers was released from a Nashville jail for assault. In December, he was charged with kidnapping and interfering with emergency calls involving Johansen.
The Nashville incident happened when they were supposed to be on a recreational trip. Police reports indicate that Johansen called her family in distress, fearing for her life. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they reported hearing the victim attempting to escape from a vehicle.
Lance Johansen, the victim's father, expressed his concerns to WLOX about Rivers' release from custody. "I sat in the courtroom in Nashville and told the judge that if they let him out, he was going to kill her," he told WLOX, adding that there had been multiple previous instances of assault.
Rivers is now being held on a $1 million bond. It's still uncertain if he has entered a plea or found an attorney.
