A house invasion attempt in San Fernando Valley's Valley Village neighborhood took an unexpected turn when the owner fired his gun at the would-be invaders. He and his accomplice were both shot; the wounded man is in critical condition. The accomplice then ran away.
Some criminals broke into a house on Addison Street in the Los Angeles neighborhood. The man who lived there was alone, but he didn't hesitate - he grabbed his gun and shot one of the thieves twice.
LA police sent out Captain Kelly Muniz to speak to reporters about what happened. "Two suspects entered a residence with an occupant inside," she said according to the New York Post. The homeowner grabbed his gun and started shooting at the thieves trying to rob him.
When the police arrived, one of the invaders was lying bleeding and wounded on the ground. The homeowner was also hurt, but no specifics about his injuries were shared. Both were rushed to the hospital. The burglar is in critical condition.
According to Muniz, the second offender was a young black male in his twenties who escaped before the authorities arrived. In their search for the fugitive, the authorities ordered the public to stay indoors and sealed off the streets.
It's unclear if the burglars were armed themselves. Muniz believes the house was randomly targeted. She noted that burglaries have been increasing across Los Angeles.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of home security in the area. Muniz advised residents to be vigilant and take preventative measures. "Moving forward, the best line of defense is knowing your neighbors and being aware of who's around, ensuring that you secure your windows," she said.
This Los Angeles home invasion is not an isolated incident. A similar event occurred in Newport Beach a few months ago - another homeowner shot a burglar in an upscale gated community.
Authorities continue to investigate Monday's shooting and are searching for the second suspect.
