A rural Michigan cop was charged with lying to investigators about a car crash involving her teenage son last year.
Amanda Szymanski, an officer in the village of Almont, allegedly told police she had been in the vehicle with her 15-year-old son when he crashed into an Amazon driver on July 2, 2023. However, prosecutors said the boy fled before Szymanski arrived at the scene in Dryden Township.
According to Fox Detroit, both Szymanski, 45, and her son, now 16, were charged this week. Szymanski faces a felony count of lying to a peace officer. Her son faced charges for leaving the scene after causing substantial harm in a collision.
The driver of the Amazon truck was badly hurt when the teenager drove his GMC Acadia into the intersection without properly yielding. A neighbor who heard the crash helped the victim while the boy left.

The case was moved to Macomb County to avoid a conflict of interest. Prosecutor Peter Lucido said officers are held to high standards, and "allegedly lying to protect a loved one only complicates the justice process."
Szymanski put up $5,000 to make bail. Back in 2017, while serving on the Ferndale police force, she received recognition as Officer of the Year from MADD.
