RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.: Emily Gold, 17, a cheerleader who'd just wowed audiences on "America's Got Talent," was found dead in what police are calling a likely suicide.
California Highway Patrol told the Daily Mail that Gold's body was found under a local overpass the night of Sept. 13, according to highway patrol. Police say several cars hit her before they could recover the body.
The teenager was a member of the Los Osos High School cheerleading team that competed in the quarterfinals of NBC's "America's Got Talent" last month. Their May audition performance earned a standing ovation from judge Simon Cowell.
Emily's brother, Alex Gold, shared a tribute on social media: "The times we spent together won't ever be enough. Half my heart is gone without you... Rest in heaven, Emily Gold, because it will always be your world."
The Gold family has not released an official statement regarding Emily's death.
Friends and community members have rallied to support the family through an online fundraising campaign created on Sept. 16. As of Sept. 30, they have raised just over $77,000.
"As a community lets come together and support the Gold family in this difficult time," wrote Jeanette Fierro, a family friend who organized the campaign. "Please know this money will go directly to the family to support them and help with expenses."
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the California Highway Patrol's Rancho Cucamonga office.
